Porirua Church of Christ
Worship
Christianity would just be another "good works society" if it were not for salvation in Christ and the reverence and worship we show to Almighty God. When we assemble together, we glorify God with our hearts, minds, and actions. Because we respect Him, our priority is to please God in our worship, not ourselves. Therefore, to worship in "spirit and truth," as Christ describes, we always consult His word as to how to worship Him (John 4:23-24).
Perhaps you're wondering what to expect when you visit us. First, you should know that you will not be singled out or embarrassed. You should also not worry about fancy clothes. Though the opportunity of financial giving will be offered to members, we do not ask our visitors to give. When you visit us on a Sunday, you should...
Expect Prayer
A vital source of the Christian’s strength is the power of prayer (James 5:16).
Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thess. 5:16-18.
Expect the Lord's Supper
The Lord’s Supper was instituted by Jesus Himself before His death on the cross (Matt. 26:26-29, 1 Cor. 11:23-26).
Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? 1 Cor. 10:16.
Expect Singing
Singing is a very important (and beautiful) part of our worship, as it was to the Christians in the New Testament (Eph. 5:19).
Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. Colossians 3:16-17.
Expect Bible Study
The Bible is the Christian's source of spiritual food and equipment for Christian living (2 Tim. 3:16-17; 1 Pet. 2:2).
Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. Acts 17:11.
Expect Financial Giving
The Bible teaches the Christian to give freely and liberally on the first day of the week as God has prospered him or her (1 Cor. 16:1-2).
Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Cor. 9:6-7.
Expect Fellowship and Love
The family of God is united by blood—the blood of Christ. We love each other, and we love spending time with each other. Though we sometimes fail, we do our best to emulate the love of Christ within and without His family.
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 1 John 4:7
